Snow Days

I have finally seen what Snow days mean to teachers. They are good to be off, but a nightmare when you get back in class. The students get rowdy and restless coming back, and get very lazy when they realize that they might not be in school the next day. It is hard for the teacher to keep on task, and to keep a schedule of what to teach, and it seems that they have to go back and relearn things, that just sets them back. I also see that some of the work that they do in between scheduled snow storms seems to be busy work, because students will more than likely forget when they return from a break.

I couldnt agree with you more, between snow days and early dismissals I feel like I am never there. I had a lesson planned out, but with the changing of the schedule due to a delay we had to modify before class. I actually felt the stress of a teacher. The teacher wanted me to try to teach a summarized version of two class periods in one day! The teacher wanted to stay on task, but I felt the students were being overloaded with information. They do have that tired restless look on their faces, like its pulling teeth to get them to participate! I have to agree my teacher does fancy the busywork. I think he is the handout king. However, he doesnt ever issue homework, because he feels the students won't do it anyway and it isnt a purpose. What are your guys' opinions about issuing homework? Do you think homework is necessary all the time? Do you think homeowrk isn't necessary but merely busywork? I really feel homework is valuable, because it is practice of the concepts for students.

I totally agree with you. Snow days are fun to have, however, it really makes catching up hard. My students were supposed to start their lesson on Rome over a week ago and they just started it today! Plus, they have to make days they have off in June. Snow days are fun, but I'd rather continue with the normal schedule!
