Practicum Placement

I had a GREAT first week and my practicum. Being in a 7th grade social studies class, I am really starting to enjoy my time with the students. Students are eager to learn and share their opinion. One student was convinced that Confucius wrote all the sayings on fortune cookies!! They are a fun group, and I am very excited about the rest of the semester!

Today the students learned about the Olympics and they competed in their own 'olympics.' The class was divided into four teams of five. Medals were issued to the students in accordance of rank-gold, silver, bronze, copper. Students read through a worksheet and answered questions regarding the olympics. Each team created a flag on posterboard, a theme song and nominated a leader. There were different games the students played and it was really meaningful to see the students so engaged. The lesson was created by the Direct Instructor.

This week the students were discussing different court cases. They were divided into groups by the instuctor and each group was given a different court case. They read the cases by themselves then afterwards got into their groups to discuss the case. It was very interesting to me that the students seemed so interested in their cases. After they discussed it they made a poster to present to the class about their court cases. It was a fun way for the students to learn something quickly.

It seems that everyone is having an enriching time at their practicums. I have been at my practicum the same as you, but I do not seem to be having the meaningful engaging as everyone. My cooperating teacher seems to teach out of the book, and the students have watched 2 movies already that dealt with Brazil, Peru and Mexico, and the teacher has them write about them at the end. The students have also had to do an Assessment that someone at the Board Office came up, and it was horrible. The map where they were to get questions was faded out completely. The teacher actually took 10 minutes from beginning of class to teach the open response questions, of course the students did not know this, but he told them to listen up because it would help them in the assessment. The students either read out of the book, and answer questions at the end of the chapter, It really is not how I would conduct class. I notice the students have a lot of free time during the school day, and one of the classes is set up wierd, in that they come in for 10 minutes to begin class, and then leave for enrichment classes.
