Wednesday is the first day at your placement - I'm sure some are nervous. What do you anticipate the classroom to look like? How do you think the students will react to you being in the classroom? Take a moment to create a new post - make these predictions. On Wednesday, take a moment and share with us your 1st impressions.

Today, Tuesday Jan. 16, 2007 was actually the first day of practicum class at Twenhoffel and I can say that it was a very good experience. I was not quite sure what to expect because my previous placement was at Two Rivers Middle School in downtown Covington. The school is old and dark, the students are very much aware of their urban setting, the teachers often seem to have little control, and there are the days where it felt more like a prison than a school. Today however, was a new day. The school is bright with lots of windows, the students were well behaved, the teachers were encouraging and seemed excited to be there, the atmosphere truly promoted learning. They even have posters of Blooms Taxonomy hanging on the walls in the multipurpose room. My cooperating teacher is in his fourth year as a teacher, and he is willing to let me teach when I would like. He says to be familiar with the Declaration Of Independence and the Constitution and anything else I can fit in with those which is a very broad category. I am excited yet nervous at the same time. So we will see how the rest of the semester goes.

I spoke with Mike the other day at Twenhofel and we both have very similar experiences. I am at Twen hofel now and I can say that I am having a much better experience than Two Rivers. Dont get me wrong I appreciate the experience that I got from Two Rivers. I learned a lot from being at Two Rivers and I will never forget the experience. At Twenhofel I am with a 6th grade Social Studies teacher who has taught at Twenhofel for 10 years. Before that he father taught for the same school for 31 years. She has a wealth of tools and techniques and is willing to share them with me. I am excited to teach this semester and look forward to receciving feedback from such a experienced teacher

Today is my second day at Two Rivers Middle School in Covington, I must say an Urban setting makes me feel like my previous placements spoiled me. This school is very structured. The students practice walking on a line to promote proper hallway procedures. In the morning the students go to reading classes where they are grouped according to ability level, but there is very little reading completed during this time and the teachers do not enforce it. I feel I am needed in this enviornment and I will continue to keep and open mind and hopefully walk away with solid teaching skills.

Today , January 18, 2007 was my second day at Summit View Middle School. I am in my social studies placement this semester, and unfortunately I have only seen 2 classes so far because there was a slight mix up in my placement. My cooperating teacher has been teaching for 10 years, and seems to really know his stuff. His classroom is very inviting and intriguing to the eye. He teaches 7th grade, which is the same grade level I worked with in Professional Semester I. I will say that I am a little more nervous about teaching social studies than I was about teaching language arts last semester, but I am really excited to experience it. My teacher just starting to use great textbook, and while observing him teach today, I notice that a lot of the students were answering questions and giving some really great thoughts. I am really looking forward to working with a new with the students and hopefully gaining a lot of knowledge about teaching social studies.
